Ford tows more than 1.25 million pounds with the electric F-150 prototype
Ford has confirmed it will bring an all-electric F-150 to market.
This will be in addition to the all-new F-150 Hybrid that goes on sale next year. Both electrified models will have the toughness, capability and innovation that F-150 customers have come to expect.
Ford's electrification plan involve playing to its strengths and building on its iconic nameplates. To do that, the automaker will leverage the unique qualities of full battery electric vehicles to amplify the attributes that their customers love and value, capability, performance and leading technology.
Ford trucks are built on a foundation of toughness. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in America for 42 straight years. Ford is aiming to blow away truck customers with new capabilities of the all-electric F-150. Bill Ford announced that an all-electric F-150 will be added to the most compelling truck line up in the world at the automaker's celebration of 100 years of manufacturing at the Rouge plant, where it builds a F-150 every 53 seconds.
Recently Ford set out to flex the muscles of the new, all-electric F-150 prototype. After all, truckers will do what truckers will do. And everyone wanted to see what could really be done by pushing this all-electric truck's capability. There is no greater tension for Ford engineers than doing live tests in front of real truck owners, while cameras are rolling.
The all-electric F-150 prototype pulled 10 double-decker rail cars for over 100 feet. In the first attempt the electric F-150 pulled empty rail cars. But in the next attempt, the rail cars were loaded with 42 traditional ICE F-150s. During this stunt, the electric F-150 pulled a load of almost 1.25 million pounds. Ford said that the all-electric F-150 prototype was towing far beyond any production truck's published capacity during the event.
This demonstration showcases Ford's commitment to remain the clear leader in trucks as well as to highlight their commitment to the future of electric vehicles. The automaker has already announced plans to bring an F-150 hybrid to market that can act as a mobile generator.
The American auto major is also working on plans to reveal the fully electric, Mustang-inspired SUV.
