IONITY registers increase in the use of its European high-power charging network after the first COVID-19 lockdown phase

IONITY, the leading high-power charging network for electric vehicles, registered an increase in the use of its charging stations over the last few months, especially after the COVID-19 lockdown period that started in April 2020.

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has led to a change in mobility behaviour in Europe and helped the e-mobility sector to further gain traction. IONITY believes that this could be due to people who already own EVs (electric vehicles) seem to increase their usage or there is a high demand for sustainable mobility in order to travel emission-free and in a carbon-neutral way.

Other factors that could've led to the surge include public transports such as trains, planes and busses seem to no longer be the safe way of travelling during the pandemic and more countries encouraging the purchase of electric vehicles by providing incentives.

Although these trends may vary by region, the volume of kWh charged at IONITY charging stations across Europe support these observations.

The registration numbers of BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) and PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles) increased across the continent already before COVID-19. The effect of the lockdown however is conspicuous.
