ABB’s Terra 184 chargers to support modernisation of Japan’s EV charging infrastructure

ABB's newly launched Terra 184 electric vehicle chargers have been selected by Japan's e-Mobility Power Co., Inc, (eMP) to modernise the infrastructure for the country's electric vehicle market and accelerate the nation's shift towards sustainable mobility. Financial details of the order were not disclosed.

The project is part of a broader push in Japan to increase the share of EVs and plug-in hybrids to between 20-30% by 2030, from just 1% in 2018. eMP is a joint venture between Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO) and Chubu Electric Power, two of Japan's biggest utility companies.

To encourage the adoption of EVs, eMP is working to reduce charging congestion and increase accessibility to charging stations, allowing users to charge their vehicles, anytime and anywhere. To modernise the EV charging infrastructure, eMP will replace obsolete chargers with more than 250 Terra 184 units. Deliveries are scheduled to begin this autumn.

eMP will install the chargers at stores located on the roadside, along highways and other public places, offering users quick and easy access. With the ability to charge up to two electric vehicles simultaneously, ABB's fast and compact Terra 184 chargers are ideal for Japan's cities.

Frank Muehlon, Head of ABB's global business for E-mobility Infrastructure Solutions, commented: “TEPCO, eMP's main shareholder led the development of the CHAdeMO charging standard which started the e-mobility revolution. We are therefore highly honored to have been selected by e-Mobility Power Co. as Japan works to transition to a new and sustainable mobility future.”

Shoko Yotsuyanagi, President of eMP, commented: “We are very pleased to be working in partnership with ABB to introduce high power fast chargers that allow simultaneous charging of two vehicles and are controlled and maintained remotely through OCPP, an international standard protocol. It is a major step forward in achieving eMP's mission.”

Terra 184 can also be connected via ABB Ability - ABB's unified, cross-industry, digital offering that extends from device to edge to the cloud - for centralized control and fast global service for software updates and maintenance, vital for the rapid deployment of EV charging infrastructure.

Terra 184 is the newest member of ABB's best-selling Terra family of chargers and supports all charging standards on the market, including CCS, CHAdeMO and AC. With highly customisable features such as cable management systems, screens and credit card payment terminals, the Terra 184 delivers maximum charging convenience for a broad range of EV users.

Muehlon concludes: “The ABB Terra 184 chargers are the outcome of over a decade of expertise in EV charging solutions, and are designed to meet the needs of electric vehicles today and the potential of a fully electrified tomorrow.”

Since entering the EV-charging market a decade ago, ABB has sold more than 14,000 DC fast chargers across more than 80 countries. Most recently, ABB recently received the Global E-mobility Leader 2019 award for its role in supporting the international adoption of sustainable transport solutions. To date, over 250,000 fully electric or plug in hybrid cars have been sold in Japan with 7,000 high power chargers (> 20kW) and 18,000 chargers (3~6kW) currently in operation.
