Spanish operator TMB to purchase 23 fully electric articulated buses

News

Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has commissioned an order for 23 100% electric powered new articulated buses to continue the replacement of diesel vehicles. These buses will be deployed on the line H16. The contract is valued at €20.7 million ($22.56 million), including VAT.

Info

The acquisition of 23 electric vehicles is part of TMB's plan to upgrade the fleet in Barcelona and its metropolitan area with environmentally friendly buses. The operator wants to add 266 units of electric, hybrid and natural gas powered buses in the period between 2019 -2021. The aim is that by 2030 the active fleet of TMB will be made only of electric, hybrid and compressed natural gas powered buses.

The new electric articulated buses will be used to continue to transform the H16 (Pg. Zona Franca - Forum/Besos Campus) line into the first line to run completely emission-free. The two ends of the line will have transformers and fast chargers installed. These chargers will be equipped so that they can simultaneously charge two buses and thus ensure regularity of the service. Currently the H16 line has a mix of electric buses and diesel buses equipped with particulate filters and nitrogen oxides circulate.

Of the 23 buses, 14 will be of the New Urbino Solaris model and the rest of the Irizar i2e type, all 18 meters long and equipped with pantographs for charging the batteries, fast en route and slow in the garage. They will, therefore, be very similar to the 7 electric articulated buses (4 Irizar and 3 Solaris) that are currently assigned to the H16 line.

In addition to having the usual comfort and equipment characteristics of the latest TMB buses, these 23 buses will be distinguished by a new interior layout, which will favour accessibility to the rear. The windows of the buses will be translucent, to improve the lighting in the passage area. These buses will incorporate the latest driving assistance system featuring artificial vision, which analyses the environment to reduce possibility of accidents, and electronic mirrors, which improve visibility in difficult conditions.

The delivery of the 23 units are expected to me made by the beginning of 2021.
