Uber’s operating license in London suspended
Transport for London (TfL) has revoked Uber’s license to operate in the British Capital.
The transport body cited that the ride-hailing giant did not meet the “fit and proper” requirements for private hire operators in the city.
TfL claimed to have uncovered several breaches that could potentially put passenger safety at risk during its inspections. TfL's inspectors have reportedly discovered that nearly 14,000 journeys were undertaken by drivers using someone else's Uber account. It was also found that almost 43 drivers had used the platform's vulnerabilities to upload their photos on other Uber driver's accounts. The transport body also said that 6 drivers suspended by Uber were successful in re-registering themselves on the platform.
The transport body said that although the vulnerability where he driver was able to swap photos had been taken care of by Uber, the platform still possessed serious flaws which could be easily manipulated by drivers. Such breaches could potentially affect the safety of passengers and render the ride uninsured.
Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, said that he backed the TfL's licensing officials on the issue. He further added that it is essential for the companies to play by the rules and keep their customers safe.
Uber said in a statement, “We have fundamentally changed our business over the last two years and are setting the standard on safety. TfL found us to be a fit and proper operator just two months ago, and we continue to go above and beyond.”
The San Francisco based company has 21 days to file an appeal against this decision. Uber confirmed that it is indeed in the process of filing an appeal. The company will be able to continue their operations during the appeals process. Uber had earlier in September this year, been granted a temporary two month license to operate in London by TfL.
