Uber adds public transport information on Delhi Metro, DTC buses to its App
Uber has been working with transit agencies across the globe for years, building partnerships such as the one with Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to provide paratransit services in Boston, to its effort in Nice, France to provide late-night connecting service to rail lines.
The company understands that the future of transport is multimodal, and that ride-sharing alone can't help build the smart cities of the future.
Working towards this idea, Uber has launched its new journey planning feature ‘Public Transport' in New Delhi, which will integrate the App with the city's Metro and public bus service. The company has chosen New Delhi as the second Asia Pacific city to get this feature, to further reiterate its commitment to this strategic market and one of the fastest growing economies in the world.
The service will be rolled out to Delhiites, making travel easier for commuters because they'll receive the information they need to make the smartest possible journey choices. After riders enter a destination, they'll see ‘Public Transport' as an option alongside ‘UberGO', ‘Premier' and ‘UberPool.' Upon selecting the ‘Public Transport' feature, riders will be able to see fastest and cheapest routes; real-time schedules; including departure time for public transportation, including Metro and buses and walking directions, to and from nearby Metro stations and bus stops.
The announcement, which allows commuters to call for a ride at the tap of a button and solve first/last mile connectivity challenges, comes shortly after Uber won a public bid to offer our mobility services across 210 Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) stations.
Uber has also announced in partnership with DMRC a ‘model Metro station' to showcase future smart mobility solutions and how public transport can be integrated with Uber's multi-modal vision for urban mobility. It highlights a breadth of first and last mile options with organized and dedicated pick-up and drop-off areas to complement public transportation. Services such as UberGO, Pool, Moto, Auto, Bikesharing and the upcoming Uber Bus will highlight the power of Uber's platform. Additionally, Uber's Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAV) will benefit differently-abled riders.
Uber expects the integration of mass-transit systems and ridesharing on one app to improve congestion, provide cleaner air, cut down the Indian capital's carbon footprint and also help leapfrog car ownership to usher in a new era of smarter mobility.
