Porsche planning to offer electrified versions of the 718, Cayenne and Panamera
Porsche CEO, Oliver Blume, said in an interview that the German sports carmaker will take a final call within the next one year on whether the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman series will be launched solely in electrified avatar.
Porsche is currently testing the prototypes of the said vehicles. If the company does finalise its decision to go electric for the 718 models, the production models would hit the roads by 2022. These vehicles if launched may be based on the Volkswagen Group's PPE (Premium Platform Electric) platform for premium electric vehicles.
The Stuttgart based carmaker will enter the next decade with the launch of the all-electric version of its SUV, Macan. Built on the PPE architecture that Porsche co-developed with Audi, the electric Macan will sport 800 Volt technology and will be built at Porsche's home of electrification, Leipzig.
Blume also sees electrification of the Porsche 911 as inevitable. He said that a hybrid drive based on the Porsche 919 Hybrid racing car was considered to be an option to power the next generation 911 due to its lower weight. The company is also considering the option of going the plug-in hybrid way for the sports car.
On the topic of solid-state batteries, Blume said that he sees the new technology being implemented in production ready vehicles only by 2025-27, that too in small quantities. He also believes that lithium-ion batteries are the way to go in the current scenario, with improvements in efficiency by reducing weight and improving energy density at almost 10% a year.
As per other reports, Porsche CFO Lutz Meschke, hinted that the Panamera and the Cayenne would also go fully electric in the future.
