Ford planning to develop second EV based on MEB platform for Europe

News

Ford is reportedly in talks with Volkswagen Group to create a second EV based on the German automaker’s MEB platform.

Info

The American auto giant had earlier this year agreed to purchase 600,000 MEB kits to develop an electric vehicle aimed specifically at the European market.

Stuart Rowley, President of Ford Europe, confirmed this news to the German publication, Handelsblatt. He went on to say that it would not make economic sense to develop only one vehicle based on the MEB architecture.

Ford will be developing the first vehicle on Volkswagen's platform in Cologne. However Rowley did not confirm whether it will be manufactured at the same location. However, he did say that the company was looking at a possibility of manufacturing the EV in Germany.

The Volkswagen Group has been developing the MEB architecture since 2016. The platform that will underpin several group vehicles from VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat as well as third-party manufacturers like e.GO was built at a cost of $7 billion.
