Toyota to use Panasonic’s Cylindrical batteries in its Chinese hybrids

News

Toyota has begun using cylindrical shaped batteries developed by Panasonic in plug-in hybrids the automaker sells in China.

Info

These batteries are being used in the Corolla and Levin PHEV sedans as per reports.

The cylindrical batteries developed by Panasonic have been in use in Tesla's EVs. Although the batteries used by Toyota are similar in size as those used in Teslas, the composition is different.

Toyota has been making efforts to secure a stable supply of batteries given the rising demand for electrified vehicles in the Asian country. The automaker has been co-developing batteries with Panasonic since a few years. Earlier this year, the two companies had established a joint venture to produce EV batteries. The Japanese automaker had been sourcing square and prismatic batteries from Panasonic in the past.

Tesla has been sourcing battery cells exclusively from Panasonic. However, there have been reports that in a bid to diversify its supply chain, the American EV maker has been in talks with LG Chem to secure a battery supply framework for its upcoming Giga-factory in Shanghai.

Toyota has also partnered with CATL and BYD to source batteries for its EVs in China.
