Applied Information and Commsignia deploy C-V2X technology in Washington

News

Applied Information, Inc., the leading provider of intelligent transportation infrastructure technology, and Commsignia announced live demonstrations of C-V2X infrastructure communications between traffic signals and vehicles traveling along New York Ave. in Washington, D.C. The demonstration took place during the Intelligent Transportation Society (ITS) of America annual meeting.

Six consecutive traffic signals along the avenue are equipped with Applied Information Glance AI-500-085 devices providing network connectivity and signal phase and timing (SPaT) data to the Commsignia ITS-RS4-D V2X roadside units (RSUs). Vehicles for the demonstration utilised the TravelSafely smartphone application, which displayed the C-V2X messaging. The RSUs and Commsignia ITS-OB4-D onboard units (OBU) feature the Qualcomm 9150 C-V2X Platform from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated. The messages displayed included red light running and a ‘get ready for green' notice.

“This demonstration in the streets of Washington with real traffic signals and real-world traffic conditions shows that C-V2X technology is ready to connect today to vehicles and smartphones,” said Bryan Mulligan, president of Applied Information. “We expect to see accelerated deployment of connected vehicle technology over the coming months as roadway operators see the abundance of benefits including preemption for emergency vehicles and priority for transit buses.”

“We are very proud to be working with the Applied Information and Qualcomm Technologies on this demonstration and installation in Washington for the ITS America,” said Jozsef Kovacs, CEO of Commsignia. “The deployment of commercial C-V2X OBU and RSU shows Commsignia's leadership in the cellular V2X space as well as commercial readiness for C-V2X. We work with our partners to scale up V2X deployments with our partners to increase traffic safety and to pave the ways for self-driving cars on these crowded road segments by providing infrastructure information through V2X radio link.”
