Shell has won EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG as a partner for this first step in its e-mobility initiative. Charging capacities of 150 kW and more are planned - and thus a reduction of the charging time to a few minutes.

“In the future, customers will be able to recharge their electric car within minutes at Shell stations,” said Jan Toschka, head of Shell's petrol station business in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. “In conjunction with our shop and service offering, we are thus creating a completely new experience for this customer segment, thereby also supporting the future expansion of electromobility. The first 50 stations are just the beginning. ”

The company will work with Shell to set up rapid charging stations with a charging capacity of 150 kW and more. The focus is on so-called High Power Chargers (HPC) with CCS, CHAdeMO and an AC connection (type 2). Depending on the vehicle configuration, two electric vehicles can simultaneously charge 150 kW of power for 100 km in around six to eight minutes. If only one electric vehicle is charging at 300 kW, the charging time for 100 km is reduced to only three to four minutes.

“The world needs more energy, but less climate-damaging emissions,” said Toschka. “Accordingly, we must decarbonise the global energy mix. In the passenger car sector, the importance of electromobility will undoubtedly increase. From Shell's point of view, we are talking about both fuel-cell vehicles and battery-electric cars. Another option, especially to reduce local emissions in the transport sector, is natural gas-based fuels. These include synthetically produced liquid fuels, also called gas-to-liquids, or liquefied natural gas (LNG). ”

With the fast-charging stations, Shell complements its previous offering for battery electric customers. In 2017, Shell acquired Dutch charging station provider New Motion and acquired a stake in Ionity. In addition, Shell had set up fast-charging stations at selected petrol stations in the UK, the Netherlands and China. The new charging stations will feature “Shell Recharge in cooperation with EnBW”.

Through the cooperation with EnBW, Shell secures direct access to the extensive know-how and years of experience of the nationwide energy company and charging infrastructure operator.
