Car owners in San Diego can reduce the financial burden of car ownership by sharing their car on Getaround and earning money when people rent it. Each car is equipped with Getaround Connect, a proprietary technology that enables renters to locate and unlock the car using the Getaround app. San Diegans who choose to live car-free, or need a specialty car for a move across town or a fun drive up the PCH, can now instantly rent nearby cars"”by the hour or day"”through the Getaround iOS or Android application, with no need to meet the owner in-person to get the car keys.

"We're thrilled to bring our carsharing platform to San Diego, a city whose culture and landscape make it a hotspot for sightseeing and day trips by both tourists and locals," said James Correa, Getaround General Manager of Southern California. "Powered by the Getaround Connect, renters can instantly access the perfect car for any type of trip or adventure, and car owners can earn money without the hassle of breaking up their day to meet renters. It's a win-win for both owners and renters, and we're happy to facilitate that kind of access and opportunity. There's always something new to see in San Diego, and Getaround is the perfect match to create new experiences in America's Finest City."

Correa helped the company launch in Los Angeles in April 2018"”one of Getaround's fastest growing markets to date"”and he is now leading the charge for San Diego. With thousands of people already signed up in San Diego, the company anticipates rapid growth with the potential for many owners to earn over $1,000 per month.

"As we continue to expand, we're dedicated to still making an impact locally," said Sam Zaid, CEO of Getaround. "Not only do we provide car owners with economic opportunity, and allow people to access transportation when they need, but we're also helping cities solve key environmental issues like smog, congestion and traffic issues."

Carsharing is a major part of the environmental sustainability movement. An independent study by the University of California Berkeley Transportation Sustainability Research Center measured the impact of carsharing. The study found that for every one car shared, about ten are taken off the road. This means that for every 1,000 cars shared on Getaround, roughly 100M pounds of carbon dioxide are offset.
