California's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has issued a permit to test self driving autonomous vehicles in the state to Didi's American research wing. Didi had been testing self-driving vehicles in closed internal environment at its Mountain View research facility in California. The permit requires Didi to test the self-driving car on public street under the supervision of a driver.
According to California DMV's website, 53 companies have been permitted to test their autonomous offerings. This comes after the state of California had brought in new rules governing these tests. These permits have been classified into three scenarios: testing with a driver, driverless testing and deployment.
The other companies that were handed out permits were major automobile players like BMW, Ford, GM, Honda, Tesla, Toyota and Subaru as well as leading tech companies like Apple, Lyft, NVIDIA and Samsung. A few Chinese companies such as Baidu, Faraday & Future, Changan Automobile have also been granted the permits.
This is Didi's first permit to test their autonomous vehicles on the streets of US.
