Uber acquires bike sharing program JUMP
Ride-hailing company Uber recently announced that it has acquired e-bike sharing startup JUMP.
JUMP, based in New York has deployed almost 12000 dockless, GPS enabled bikes in 40 cities across 6 countries. JUMP currently operate in San Francisco and Washington, D.C and plan to expand to more cities before the end of 2018. JUMP had been test running their services within the Uber app since the last two months.
Uber says that this acquisition is a step towards its ultimate goal of making it easier to live in the cities without owning a personal vehicle, thereby improving urban life by reducing congestion, pollution and the need for parking spaces. Uber is also trying to bring together multiple modes of transportation within the Uber app, so that the customers can reach their destinations in the fastest and most affordable way.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi says, " Today I'm excited to announce we've entered into an agreement to acquire JUMP Bikes, an electric, dockless bike-sharing service we've already been testing in San Francisco. Our hometown pilot is off to a very strong start, with riders enjoying a convenient and environmentally friendly way to cruise up and down our trademark hills.
JUMP's CEO Ryan Rzepecki is an impressive entrepreneur who has spent the better part of a decade bringing bike-sharing to life across the globe. I'm thrilled to welcome his team and their stellar product onto the Uber platform."
JUMP founder Ryan Rzepecki says, " We're excited to begin our next chapter and to play a significant part in the transition of Uber to a multi-modal platform.Combining JUMP's track record of product innovation and city partnerships with Uber's scale, operational excellence, and resources will allow us to make a global impact faster than if we were to pursue our vision alone. At our core, we are still the same team that is passionate about partnering with cities to increase cycling, but joining Uber presents us with the opportunity to realize our dreams faster and at a much larger scale.
JUMP will continue to operate in a way that remains true to our roots and we will remain good partners to cities while delivering excellent service to our riders. The JUMP brand will also continue and we hope it will represent the best in bike share technology and responsible operations. Together with Uber, I firmly believe we can make a more significant impact on the world and shift millions of trips from cars to bikes."
