Assessment of strategy and execution for 18 companies developing automated driving systems
{inStory1}
Automated driving is increasingly being considered the key technology to address societal problems caused by the proliferation of automobiles around the world. These include traffic congestion, injuries, and fatalities caused by crashes and air quality. The development of automated driving has been ongoing since at least the 1950s. However, it has accelerated in the last decade, enabled by advancements in computational architectures and sensing technology, along with dramatic cost reductions. These advancements, combined with vehicle electrification and ubiquitous connectivity, are enabling automated driving to rapidly become viable.

Navigant Research attempted to create a leaderboard based on each company's vision and execution in order to get an idea of which ones might have a lead. It published the report this week with interesting results.

They based the rankings on 10 criteria:

vision; go-to market strategy; partners; production strategy; technology; sales, marketing, and distribution; product capability; product quality and reliability; product portfolio; staying power.

Tesla has been thought of as a market leader because of its aggressive timeline to reach level 5 autonomy years ahead of the competition and the fact that it has the most advanced sensor suite available in a vehicle today. Consequently, it is also accumulating the most data since its fleet of sensor-equipped vehicles are in the hands of customers.

But it wasn't even enough to make the top 10 list. Ford and GM took the top spots, despite Tesla declaring they will have a level 5 demonstration ready by the end of the year.

So, the top 10 vendors as listed in the new report are:

1. Ford
2. GM
3. Renault-Nissan Alliance
4. Daimler
5. Volkswagen Group
6. BMW
7. Waymo
8. Volvo/Autoliv/Zenuity
9. Delphi
10. Hyundai Motor Group
